Surf's up in Dallas these days! I got a chance to take a class at City Surf today and was pleasantly surprised. When you enter the studio in Uptown, you feel like you are walking into a board shop on the beach...I invision Costa Rica, but maybe because that's my only personal surfing reference.
"At City Surf, we wanted to bring a part of the beach to the city. To remind our community every day that while we may be in the busy city, we can still appreciate and benefit from the inspirations of the natural world."*
And I will definitely agree that this place does that. The mood is chill and the palate wood wall is a sutle, yet hip touch to the small space. The chalkboards are my favorite though. They have all the science behind the waves, and some awesome chalk drawings.

The class is 50 minutes, and that was plenty of time. I am a pretty fit chick. I squat heavy quick often. I am confident with my strength but I quickly learned that my stabalizing muscles needed some help.
The board feels a lot like a regular surf board, so that was cool. What was surprising is how unstable the board is, hence the need to your more stabalizing muscles than primary movers (little muscles vs. big ones). I found my core working extra hard as well. I know from my fitness and massage experience that the core stablizers are essential to a healthy back, and definitely see this as a great way to work those.
My comfort zone is absolutely in a Crossfit gym or yoga studio. I feel confident and like I know that I can do what is asked of me with coordination and relative ease and understanding. This class rocked that feeling a little bit. (Not as much as my Hip Hop class at Dallas Grit Fitness....but I'm saving that for another blog post down the road) I felt uneasy on the board, as it wobbles back and forth A LOT. But Dora, the class instructor, was so helpful in quickly making me feel more confident on the unsteady surface. Oh, and she is a mama of two little ones and I totally adore her. Go take her class is you can!
Overall, I got a great sweat in. I can definitely see why people like it. They offer a variety of classes and I will be back to take a few more and report back here. They have a Buddha Board class which is yoga on the surf board and I'm totally gonna have to find the time to take that class. Anyone wanna join me?

I recommend this class for those looking for a little added stablizing work. Maybe you are having some back pain, or can't quite get your core to fully engage. The board forces you to work these things, and it would be an excellent recommendation for those looking for that.
As far as it being mama-friendly, yes but there is
no childcare. They have a variety of class times available, even on the weekend.
Keep an eye out for more reviews of different classes at City Surf Fitness. I will totally be back for more!
